Choosing the right toll class

There are different toll classes in Slovenia. These are based on the size of the vehicle. This is how these classes come about:

• Toll class 1: This includes motorcycles and scooters. The decisive factor is whether they are single-track, i.e. all their wheels are arranged one behind the other.
• Toll class 2A: Includes all ordinary passenger cars. There are two requirements for this class: Firstly, the gross vehicle weight must not exceed 3.5 tons. Secondly, the height at the front axle must not exceed 1.3 meters. Larger SUVs and minivans therefore also belong in this class if they meet the two requirements.
• Toll class 2B: Larger vehicles that do not meet the requirements of class 2A but are not yet heavy vehicles are assigned to class 2B. These are vans and delivery vans, for example.
• Heavy vehicles: The “normal” toll is not sufficient for anything that is too large and heavy even for class 2B. This applies to trucks and motorhomes, for example. In these cases, you must use the DarsGo transponder, which is also available online. The costs are then calculated on the basis of the kilometers driven, the number of axles and the Euro emission class.

How much the vignette costs in Slovenia

You can purchase the digital vignette online in advance as well as at petrol stations and DARS points of sale near the border. However, it is advisable to buy the vignette before you start your journey. This will save you time and stress on the road.

Period of validity of the e-vignette

In Slovenia, you can purchase the e-vignette for three different periods: 7 days, one month or one year. There is a special feature for the toll class. Here, the monthly vignette is replaced by a 6-month vignette.

You can also pre-date the vignette by up to one month. This allows you to make provisions long before you start your journey. There is an important innovation for the annual pass. This is no longer tied to a calendar year. Instead, it is valid for 12 consecutive months.

But beware: the vignette is valid from the first day. So if you are planning a journey from Friday to the following Friday, that is a total of 8 days.

Penalty for driving without a vignette

Anyone who does not comply with the vignette requirement for highways and expressways must expect fines. These range from €300 to €800. The amount depends on how long you have been driving on a toll road without a vignette and what kind of vehicle you are driving. Repeat offenders who have been caught in the last 24 months are often asked to pay even more.

Surveillance is carried out by vehicles and permanently installed cameras. You should not hope for lax controls here either. In Slovenia, the police keep a close eye on such violations.

Anyone who is unable or unwilling to pay must expect their driving license to be confiscated until the fine has been paid. Compared to these - quite hefty - penalties, the cost of the vignette is nothing.

Good to know: The e-vignette is only valid for a specific vehicle, not for you personally! It is therefore not possible to change cars during your trip to Slovenia without buying another vignette.

Is it possible to avoid the highways in Slovenia?

We advise against this. Not only are the alternatives often poorly signposted, it also simply takes much longer. In addition, many areas in the immediate vicinity of freeways are subject to tolls. This applies to traffic circles, for example. The police are particularly vigilant in these border areas and can impose fines. It doesn't matter if you accidentally enter such an area - you will still have to pay.
